Thoughts on the Future Museum

Why are people culturally invested in museums?

Since the question was asked of the book, I find it a good place to start research information on museums. As well as include (notes from class):

  • history
  • current uses
  • future uses
  • problems in the industry

Schedule of Readings & Presentation Info

Here’s an excerpt from Parry’s syllabus about timing for:

  • assigning reading to the rest of the class
  • presenting

Reading: For class you should assign 4-5 hours of “reading.” Reading here is in quotes because not everything you assign needs to be text. You could for instance assign a recorded lecture, a short documentary, or a website. But, a substantial portion of the reading should be scholarly articles with a critical perspective on these questions. You want the readings to address not only the history of said institution, but also the ideas that have informed that history. Your group could also choose to divide the readings in interesting ways, having some shared readings (which everyone would cover) and some distributed ones (half the class looking at one thing, with the other half another).

Class Discussion / Presentation: Each group should come to class prepared to frame the discussion for the day. This should take the form of a very short presentation (think three to five minutes). Which highlight the central questions/issues for the day.

Timeline

  • Now: Start reading/researching on your topic.
  • Three weeks prior to class session: Email me a working list of the readings for feedback.
  • One week prior to class session: Post and make available, a list of readings for the week.

We need to hand out our list of readings on March 24.

And then, we do the class discussion on March 31.

Ready!?

Okay, so I haven’t heard from everyone in the group yet. But I thought I’d just write a post up here and see who responds with a comment. I’m gathering a few random ideas on museums and I am interested in:

  • what sort of status museums possess in current culture (are they on people’s radar screen?)
  • how they collect and store information (current and future plans)
  • the process by which museums share information (or physical exhibits) with one another
  • reach – as in – the radius of influence that a museum has on a community

I understand that art-types of museums may be off limits for the project, but I thought I’d share this anyways. Last semester, in Information Design and Innovation (ATEC 6351), Lee Don Moore presented some wonderful ideas about art and how making it movable/mobile (and still maintain its materiality if applicable) might help shift people’s attitudes towards art.
